BETA CLUB at St. Mary Catholic Community School

What is the Beta Club?

The Beta Club is a nationally recognized service organization that originated in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  The Beta Club organization began in 1934 and celebrates over 70 years of service to others.  There are two types of Beta Clubs: a Senior Beta Club for those students in grades 9 though 12 and a Junior Beta Club for those students in grades 5 through 8.  At St. Mary Catholic Community School, we have a Junior Beta Club that has been part of our school community for four years.  As we begin our fifth year of service, we look forward to new opportunities to serve others.  At this point in time, we are proud to be the only Beta Club in our diocese and also the only junior club north of Indianapolis!

Who sponsors the Beta Club?

This will be the fifth year that Mrs. Nancy Anglis will sponsor the Beta Club.  Mrs. Carol Drasga co-sponsored the club for three years until her youngest child graduated from St. Mary's School.  For the second year in a row, the co-sponsors are Mrs. Rose Kendal and Mrs. Karen Wacker.

What is the purpose of the Beta Club?

This is our most frequently asked question (FAQ)! We want to offer students the opportunity to spend time looking for ways to serve and honor others.  We provide activities and events in which students develop an appreciation for others and are able to act in philanthropic ways.  We always strive to be mannerly and courteous to one another so that a level of respect is maintained.

THE BETA CLUB MOTTO: We will lead by serving others.

THE BETA CLUB MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of the National Beta Club shall be to promote the ideals of character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students, to reward meritorious achievement and to encourage and assist students in continuing their education after high school.

THE BETA CLUB VISION STATEMENT: The National Beta Club, a student-centered organization, continually develops and nurtures individuals by providing opportunities and experiences enabling them to demonstrate the ideals of character, achievement, service and leadership in a global community.

Who can join the Beta Club?

Any student can join the Beta Club in grades 5 through 8.  The requirements include a GPA of 2.0 or higher as found in our athletic eligibility restrictions.  The students and their parents are required to sign an agreement that honors the integrity of the Beta Club as we work to treat all adults and each other with great respect and to eradicate any type of bullying from our school.

What activities are available though the Beta Club?

In the past five years, we have sponsored the Salvation Army Angel Tree, acted as "special persons" for younger children who did not have anyone able to attend "Special Person Day", we have hosted teacher appreciation breakfasts, we have planted a tree at the Juvenile Center to honor the protection of abused children, and we have sent literally thousands of cards to every student and teacher in our school!
