Welcome to second grade!   We spend a great deal of time improving our reading skills.  We have parents come in and listen to us read, and we read to Kindergarten A. Accelerated Reader is a very important component of our reading program. When we are not reading, we may be working on our Math skills.  Saxon Math is lots of fun.  By the end of the year, we know our addition and subtraction facts and have started to memorize our multiplication tables.  Problem solving is also stressed.

Religion is a very important part of our day.  We pray together daily, learn to pray the rosary, and attend Mass weekly. We even have an opportunity to read at Mass.  During Lent we will receive our second sacrament, Reconciliation.

Building on our first grade experience with writing sentences, we begin to combine sentences to write a story.  We are learning to use the 6 Traits  ( Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Ideas and Conventions) to focus and improve our writing.

During Science class we learn about plants, animals, the solar system, dinosaurs, matter, electricity, and many other topics.  In Social Studies we learn about our place in the world by exploring our community, our state, our country, our continent, and our world.

That’s a brief peek into second grade.  Maybe you would like to join us!
