Welcome to 4th Grade!
We make so many big leaps in the earlier grades that we hardly notice the
big ones
we make in 4th grade! One big leap in 4th grade is the movement toward
increased
independent work. Assignments are longer and require a bigger time
commitment for
successful completion. Writing becomes an integral part of every subject
area!
The Religion curriculum in 4th grade covers the Ten Commandments,
Beatitudes, Jesus' Law of Love, and the Sacraments. We also learn all
about the Bible and the
Liturgical year.
In Reading, we move from that crucial shift of "learning to read" into
the stage
"reading to learn". Fourth graders still work on mechanics like
vocabulary, but
also work on strategies that boost understanding. Accelerated Reading
provides the
outlet for improved reading skills.
In Writing, we use the 6 + 1 writing strategy to expand our writing skills.
We
write essays, narratives, reports, and stories, where emphasis is placed on
sentence
structure, coherent thought, and correct paragraph formation. All
this, while
striving toward proper use of punctuation!
Math instruction in 4th grade builds on previous concepts: place value,
addition,
subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, data analysis, and time
(and
that is only the beginning!). Fourth graders learn all about
fractions, decimals,
long division, basic geometry, and even pre-algebra!
In Science, fourth graders learn about plant and animal life, weather,
matter and
energy, earth and earth processes, and electricity.
In Social Studies, we learn all about the fabulous state we live in-
Indiana! We
explore its history, geography, government, economics, and culture.
During our
annual educational fair, we research the many people and places that have
shaped our state. It's an exciting and most informative journey!
Fourth grade is an exciting (and exhilarating) year for students!
Having a small
part in the big leaps which occur is equally as exhilarating for me!
